Lugubrious's Review:
A few select metal bands have found the formula for success. The first equation, used by bands such as Lamb of God and Shadows Fall, takes classic elements of metal such as thrash or death and puts a modern twist on them. Sol Asunder seems to acknowledge this idea with two feet planted firmly into the underground and two middle fingers raised high in the sky at the mainstream. No one could tag this band with humiliating labels such as Nu-metal or Metalcore, yet they hardly fit into a genre such as Death or Black. This is what makes Sol Asunder such a good band, anyone could get into them. The kid freaking out over the new Nightrage album could get into this, while the other kid pissing himself waiting for Lamb of God to come to town with Slipknot will equally enjoy this special and unique brand of metal. The list of influences on these guys is monstrous; undoubtedly they are full supporters of extreme metal. The sound is so fresh and exciting, reminiscent of many of the more popular bands, yet they sound nothing like any of them.
The second equation, which when added to the results of our first equation equals future success, is the understanding that brutality is much more powerful alongside melody. A whole scene was founded on this idea, often called melodic death metal or Gothenburg after the famed town in Sweden from which it is said to originate. What separates Sol Asunder from this sound is their use of melody - it is much different, oftentimes placed to calm the listener down before they are hit once again.
This is a band to look out for, all the numbers add up.
