Savage's Review:
Skywind, pronounced wind as in "wind up toy," was formed on the frozen streets of Minneapolis in 1996. After seeing a tornado twist across the Minnesota sky, their name was decided upon. Like the tornados that tear across the Midwest, Skywind has been playing the club scene in the same manner, destroying the venues, yet building a loyal base of fans along the way. With a new full length ten track offering titled O2 in tow, they are ready to conquer the masses with their brand of melodic progressive metal.Musically, Skywind combines muddy low end guitars with dark keyboard interludes that have a strange 80s retro feel and deliver a trancelike vibe throughout much of O2. Combined with tribal styled drum beats and thudding bass, Skywind creates a thick and richly textured ambience.
Vocally, Joseph utilizes some addicting cleans that move smoothly along amidst some very good harmonizing. I especially liked these on "Lamhaj" and "O2," easily my two favorite tracks. I found myself listening to these over and over again. Unfortunately, this CD grew tedious after the first six songs. The next couple droned along and I could no longer differentiate between them. The last song "Inside Out" must have been a tribute to Pink Floyd because it borrowed lyrics and riffs from "The Happiest Days of Our Lives" and "Another Brick in the Wall."
Overall, the strongest tracks were brilliant, but the weaker tracks simply overshadowed what could've been a great album. Skywind definitely have the talent to make it, they just need to work on creating a CD that rocks from start to finish, a daunting task in this day and age when a band has one or two radio hits and disappears.
