  • Kefka X's Review:
I have to be honest and say that the entire Swedish-style of melodic death just ain't my thing. Don't get me wrong, I have absolutely nothing against it. I certainly admire the musicianship and heart that goes into the music, and let's face it . . . some of the most memorable riffs and guitar solos of the past ten years have come from this style of metal. I guess there are just too many of these sort of bands coming out at the same time to the point that I lose interzest (of course, I'm a grindcore hypocrite).

With that said, I'd certainly place Silent Scythe in the higher leagues of the genre. While the band isn't something you haven't heard before already, it's done very well. Upon first hearing them I can make comparisons to the intensity of Black Dahlia Murder (which is my favorite melodic death band at the moment, and they're American!) and even some of Soilwork's work (lol) from The Chainheart Machine. The guitarwork rips right through you with its frantic, desperate Gothenburg style of riffing. The dueling guitar harmonies, while commonplace for this genre of metal, will certainly have you drawing comparisons to the masters themselves, Iron Maiden. The drumming is solid, and while nothing extraordinary, fits in place perfectly with the above-average guitarwork. The vocals are like a hybrid of growls and high pitched clean singing that would sound more at home with a power metal act, but still get the job done well, nonetheless.

Final conclusion? While this is nothing that will shatter the boundaries of the melodic death scene, Silent Scythe certainly does kick serious ass. If you don't mind the cliche, this stuff is truly metal. If you're not bored with the melodic death movement going on, you should give this a listen.
