Musashi's Review:
If you've read some of my demo reviews, you probably realize that I can find something critical to say of almost any demo; Sift's demo is no exception. At first I was thinking that this might not be so bad. It starts off with a song called "Know." The opening guitar riff reminds me of Tool, then the vocals come in and put images of Alice In Chains in my head. Although Chris's vocals are not as distinctive as Layne's. The song runs into trouble around the 4 minute mark where the same riff gets repeated until the 6 1/2 minute mark without variation. The problem with that is 1) it's really boring, 2) 6 1/2 minutes is too long for a first track on a demo, and 3) it's really boring. The second song, "Transgression," has a similar problem of long, drawn out, meandering parts. This time the drummer is the culprit. Overall, I would say Sift needs to sift through their material and edit some of their songs. "Transgression" clocks in at over 7 1/2 minutes. By now I could have listened to four songs by another band.
I am really not looking forward to "Bent." My fears prove to be justified as it takes 2 1/2 minutes before the band finally joins in after the long, atmospheric intro. A look at the counter shows that this song is over 10 minutes in length. I fear now that I will not be able to last until the end. I am not a fan of epic songs on epic demos.
I like the sound of this band. I like the sound of the demo. I just don't care for long, boring songs. It's like trance music. I think these guys went to a few too many raves. If you're into that, then go check out Sift. I think that what separates these guys from doing a good Tool rip-off, is that Tool can keep a song interesting by subtly changing the riffs or the orchestration or some other variable. Sift merely plays the same thing ad nauseum.
