  • Musashi's Review:
Scylla is the solo project of Eugene Clearwater. Eugene plays all the instruments. Unlike most demos where one person plays all the instruments, The Eternal Darkness is really good. I am actually amazed that he played all the instruments on the CD. The performances are quite convincing. The production is a little muddy, but overall it's really well done.

The music reminds me of early Ministry with some Iron Maiden mixed in. He describes himself as Melodic/Emotional/Power Death Metal. What does that mean? The guitars play a lot of good single line melodies. The vocals are distorted and raspy. There is a lot of double bass drum. There are some acoustic parts and some keyboards.

The guitar parts are very well orchestrated with doubled harmony lines. The drums are well done. It sounds like he used triggers on a real kit because the feel is human but the sounds are canned, except for some parts which sounded totally canned. The keyboards aren't annoying which is my way of saying good. The vocals are mixed a little low but sound good.

It's rare that I really like a demo. Eugene really did a great job of putting his ideas on tape. He says that he is going to release a full length CD in the Winter. I am looking forward to it. I'm sure it will be worth picking up. I'm so used to tearing demos apart that it is hard to find enough good things to say about this one.
