Musashi's Review:
So I get this email that reads as follows:Metal Judgement,
I know you get a shitload of CDs every month, and I know you actually don't even like reviewing demos, but I wanted to see if you could post a review of Sanctum AZ's CD if it's not too much trouble. I sent the CD to you about a year ago, and check your website periodically. The only reason I'm writing is, you seem to keep reviewing bands that recorded in their bathrooms, that are one-man projects, that had a five year-old draw a picture of a dragon on the cover, etc., which end up pissing you off and in turn get negative reviews. Not only am I anxious to get your opinion, but I'm tired of reading reviews of these crappy bands that probably didn't deserve to be reviewed in the first place.
Thanks, Jason Green www.SanctumAZ.com
Ask and you shall receive! You think you're tired of me reviewing crappy bands?! I just watched American Idol and felt such sympathy for those poor judges. There are some horrible singers out there as well as some dreadful bands. Why is it that people are so deluded into thinking that they have talent when they obviously don't?
Sanctum AZ has come to our rescue. These guys from Phoenix are extremely talented and have a lot of experience. This is a great five-song demo. The production is clean. The music is tight. The sound is somewhere between Machine Head and Nevermore.
Sure, there are some weak spots in this demo that would normally rate this a four skull demo. There are points where the drums are not perfectly in time and the vocals crack a little. I also think the songwriting is good but not great. They have a sound that is extremely radio friendly (metally speaking) but I don't hear a hook that really stands out as a hit. Nonetheless, I have to give them an extra skull for being both persistent and sympathetic. These guys ooze talent and just need to keep knocking on doors until they get a big break.
