Blind's Review:
After fully listening to Saifa's Dislocate demo, I have deduced that one of two things, or perhaps both, is true:Seriously though, those pipes have to be silenced.
- The band, as well as fans of the band, are tone deaf. Scott Friends' vocals are just plain awful. He sounds like an untrained power metal vocalist. Very flat, and it seems he has much trouble hitting notes. His range, from a low one to a high ten, hangs around four to six. The vocals are also very blah. Nothing excited or encouraging singing along to them is present here. Or,
- Scott Friends started the band, and thus he chooses who stays and who goes.
Concerning the rest of the music:
Rather than continuing to trash this crap, I encourage all of you to go to their web site--possibly out of morbid curiosity--and listen to their mp3s. I think you'll agree with most of the stuff I said.
- Um... it's okay. I do not like the way the production came out. One can hear the bass guitar quite clearly, but not the almost absent sounding rhythm guitar. Think of ...And Justice for All reversed.
- The above point considerably lessens the listener's enjoyment of this disc. For example, track four, "Free From," starts with a really crunchy riff, but then it gets buried with the introduction of the other instruments and that hideous singing.
- Little to no double bass drumming here. These guys sound like watered down power metal. As I've said in the past, I believe that proficient double bass usage is mandatory in power metal. It's what makes that hair metal influence exciting!
- Speaking of pace, the songs are all pretty much the same tempo. It is not a good sign when I am not tired, yet I find myself yawning as I listen to a CD. I fast-forwarded a lot to try to find some way out of the mediocrity Saifa presented me with.
- These guys claim to be "progressive hard rock". I tend to think of maybe Dream Theater or Fates Warning with such claims. This band sounds nothing like either of those.
One good thing I can say: Saifa is not touring right now. They may actually be defunct. This is good for me, as I occasionally go to local shows, and I'd hate to have to sit through this band--even for free.
Kudos to them for trying, and for including one interesting track, "Dr. Who". Then, it's back to the doldrums of rock.
Two word review: above par (think bogey).
