  • Musashi's Review:
This demo starts off great. I mean it's a homerun. The first two tracks, "Watching the World Die" and "Eulogy (Part II)," are awesome. Purgation sounds like Black Label Society meets early Soundgarden with a healthy dose of Black Sabbath. Unfortunately, "Slumber" and "Realm of The Dead" are not of the same caliber. So what started off as a five skull review has dropped notch to a four skull review. Still there is no shame in that.

Purgation play some great heavy guitar riffs which are backed up by good solid vocals. Better still the songs are good. Purgation have paid attention to dynamics and to momentum. Despite their stoner rock roots, they don't let songs wallow too long in tedious riffs, they keep kicking your ass forward before you get bored.

The mix is good for a demo but could be better. I found myself wanting a little more guitar and a little less kick drum. I also felt that the demo as a whole could have been slickened up just a notch. I was wishing that the instruments were all placed in the same "sonic space." A touch of compression and some reverb would have been nice.

Anyway, back to the music. The guitar solos were sloppy but fit the bill. The main thing that bothered me more than anything was Ronnie's voice. It sounded great on about sixty percent of the music, no it sounded good on a hundred percent of the music. What did not sound good to me was some of his melody choices. When the music slowed down, especially on "Slumber" and "Realm of The Dead," his vocal melodies would start to lag and lose steam. In the fast parts, Ronnie is kicking ass and taking names. His vocals are really convincing and tough. When it starts to slow down I want to stop listening all together.

As far as the music goes, this is a five skull demo from beginning to end. However, due to the melodies and the rough mix I am going to take off a skull. On the bright side, Purgation apparently have another CD that looks pretty good. Maybe they'll send me that one for a follow up review. Notwithstanding a skull deduction, I think Purgation is a fucking awesome band and I want to hear more from them. Keep up the good work.
