  • Musashi's Review:
Metal New Year! I hope this year is even more metal than the last year. One of my resolutions is that 2002 is the year of the cardio. I have made a conscious effort to listen to more Slayer while I am working out. So far it has helped. I think good music is a poor man's steroids. Crank it up loud, push a few extra pounds and run a few extra miles, motherfucker! In the gym, the metal is both your friend and enemy. I am constantly fighting the iron trying to dominate it instead of letting it dominate me. Ironically, listening to metal in my headphones is the best way to psych myself up for the fight. It is going to be a very tough year.

With my muscles twitching and aching I put the Pipebomb CD in the stereo. The letter that accompanies the CD is very nice and straightforward with a bio attached. The CD cover is a disturbing revamping of Public Enemy's It Takes a Nation of Millions, or at least that is the impression I get with the crosshairs positioned over the middle east. How 'Bout Now? is Pipebomb's second self-produced and self-released CD. According to their website, they are doing well and have lots of gigs and are even finalists in a battle of the bands this weekend in Brooklyn. They even have lots of good merch. Cool!

The music is good. It has a Sevendust meets Godsmack meets Soundgarden type of vibe. The band relies on dual vocals which works really well for them. The voices compliment each other perfectly: one low and smooth, the other high and screechy. Both guitarists play 7-string guitars so there is enough bass to make you nauseous, but they manage to keep it from being muddy and disgusting.

Although I am losing interest in bands like Sevendust and Godsmack, I see no reason why Pipebomb should not share the same level of success as those bands. They have good songs and a great sound. Of course there is no justice in this world that is why bands like American Head Charge are allowed to live. See also: Nickelback.

Pipebomb managed to keep me entertained through more than a couple of songs. How 'Bout Now? is not going to replace Slayer as my workout CD, but I will give them 5 skulls nonetheless for putting out a really good CD. I hope they win the battle of the bands this weekend. Good luck!
