  • Metal Militia's Review:
Phoebe's Phobia is a two man thrash project out of England, and they are raw as hell. The question now is, do they purposefully have a raw sound to enhance the meaning of their music, or are they just poor and can't afford to produce their albums at all? Either way I'm not really fond of their music, but if it the so called "kvlt" production is done for artistic purposes, I can respect that a little more. Based on this demo, I'm going to have to say that the production is intentional and that it actually does help get their message across. Phoebe's Phobia hate "nu-metal" - in fact their e-mail address is DEATHTOAMERICANFALSEMETAL@hotmail.com. It sounds almost Manowarrian, but this band is definitly not Manowar.

The raw thrash of Phoebe's Phobia doesn't work very well for two reasons. One, the drum machine sounds horrible. It often doesn't fit the rest of the music and has an irritating sound to it. The second reason is this demo was recorded onto a tape and it is next to impossible to tell where one song ends and the other begins. They just play one song after the other with little or no stopping in between and then the tape ends. The only song I could easily identify was the sixth track, a cover of Celtic Frost's "Dethroned Emperor." The cover is decent enough but it is basically a rehash of the original song. I like covers to offer a new take on the classics and that didn't happen here.

What I did like about the demo is the excellent riffing. The guitar work is very strong and the riffs have a tendency to kick ass. I think the production muffles the riffs somewhat, but on the other hand it gives the demo a much more "evil" feel to it, and I think that is what they are going for. No one will mistake Phoebe's Phobia for a nu-metal band, and that is probably their goal. I think I'm going to be generous on this one because even though the production hurts the record, the riffs are so good that it is worth a listen or three.
