Behemoth's Review:
We're reaching back a bit for this critique of Overthrone's demo Terres Astrea Reliquit, kudos to the first who can identify the meaning. The band was created in the late 1990's by two brothers, Nathan and Toby Nickels, after previous musical ventures were unfulfilling. As their creative energies grew, they decided to handle all instrumentation themselves on their first demo Firestorm, released in 2001. The following two years saw the band working on new material which lead to the recording of the above referenced demo. The release has seen limited distribution, but lucky enough it found its way to our mighty portal. The band reportedly have been working on blackened extreme metal of late, but none is found on this demo, unfortunately. The bands emphasizes lyrics, production and performance, or so they say. Three songs doesn't provide much of an opportunity to get a true read on Overthrone, and the song titles, "Trivial Demise," "Departure" and the title track, leave few clues behind. Basically, mid tempo dark atmospherics are laced with guttural vocalization and chanting; the use of synthesizers adds an unusual twist to the genres dimension. However, the bands efforts are unduly punished by thin production, as result the bottom end is missing in action.
Overall, a decent demo listen but the band must modernize its sound to compete in the modern world.
