Blind's Review:
I love this job. Sure, I don't get paid, but I get lots of free shit. The latest in the haul was this Osmium CD, From the Ashes. Now, don't go thinking I'm going to be soft just because the disc was on the house. ALL the discs are free, and you've read some of my past reviews. (Heh Heh)Here's the breakdown:
The only gripe I have about From the Ashes (besides the implicit ones above) is that most of these songs are the same pace, which can be kind of tedious. I think a crowd would beat the shit out of each other with one or two of these "pit pleasers," but not for a whole set.
- Production: excellent for a demo. (I'd suggest bringing up the bass guitar a bit, but otherwise, the mastering is stellar.) You can crank this without any major equalizer adjustments.
- Songwriting: good. Above average, certainly. Many superior tracks here, including "Drifting Away," "Frozen," "The World of Anguish," and "Jesus Lover" (which has a very "Seek and Destroy" type riff). My suggestions: make some things a little more complex. There's a lot of 00000000 verse riffing here. It's fine sometimes, but not this much.
- Comparing this album: you'll hear Sacred Reich type songs, Benediction-esque vocals, and other elements of thrash, nu-metal, and a bit of Napalm Death style grind. An interesting mix that works very well.
- No noise intro! That calls for a free skull!
Still, don't let that deter you. Osmium has put out a quality disc that demands attention. I smell a record deal very shortly for these boys.
This is worthy thrashing, so go check it out!
