    *sighs*

Flaw #1: Nigel? I would like an explanation for the name. I expected to find one (or maybe a band bio or something) on their web site, but that site is either a bad joke or is now defunct. I went there and was treated to no less than FOUR pop up ads, as well as a page that was nothing more than a shill marketing page with a search engine. (The only mention of this band I could find anywhere was at http://www.nettleinghamaudio.com/clients/index.html under Clients/2002/July.)

Flaw #2: the cover of the disc is, in a word, tacky. It looks like a cue ball superimposed on a blurry picture of a car stereo.

Flaw #3: the “press kit”. It sucks. It’s one sheet of paper with two very small, uninformative paragraphs, some cheesy pictures, the dead web address, and some contact info. Not very impressive, and certainly not “user friendly” to those doing reviews.

Flaw #4: the bass drum on this album sounds like shit. It’s nearly inaudible. (Reminds me of the saddening drums on, say, most of the songs on Strapping Young Lad’s first album.)

Flaw #5: stupid lyrics. There was no lyric sheet available anywhere, but from what I heard, this band sounds like a bunch of teenagers that think swearing is “cool” and also good enough to constitute the majority of songs. From the rest of what I could make out, the lyrics had zero substance. Track nine, “Ryan Dude’s Perfect Date” is a good example of this—a computer generated woman talking about sex and a bunch of other simple-minded bullshit.

Now, with all that said, I’d love to rip this band a fourth asshole, but I can’t. The music is actually really good. If you took The Offspring and shot them in the ass with a hard rock/metal cocktail, they’d sound like this. It has some really excellent, crunchy and memorable guitar hooks with a minimal amount of solos. (I’m not a big fan of solos.) Even as I was writing all the above criticism, I was banging my head to probably every song I heard.

Particular favorites of mine are “Catalina,” “Lesbians,” and “Return of the Gods”. The rest are also pretty good. If you like the softer side of metal with a little bit of punk, you’ll dig this album—if you can find it, which seems doubtful. (Couldn’t even find it on ebay, cdbaby.com, cdnow.com, or amazon.com.)

I guess this album is like a spouse who’s a really good lay but keeps cheating… you take the good with the bad, eh?
