Musashi's Review:
According to their bio, Necroid is an American Black Metal band that is influenced by Celtic Frost, Venom, Emperor, Destruction and King Diamond. I admit black metal ain't my bag, baby, but I know a bad demo when I hear it and this Necroid demo is a real stinkburger.First of all, the sound quality is horrible. The drums sound like someone banging on a cardboard box. In fact, none of the instruments are recorded well. The whole thing sounds like it was done on a bad Fostex 4-track without the benefit of any compressors or nice effects.
Second, the editing is really choppy. The first song, "Demon Winds," just cuts off at the end before the cymbals finish ringing. The third song, "Deep Ones," has a slow intro that is poorly pasted onto the beginning of the song. You can hear the clicks come in and hear the mute buttons being pushed. Weak!
To the untrained listener, the cookie monster vocals that are ubiquitous in metal music today would seem to require very little talent to reproduce. It is only when one hears vocals performed this poorly that they can truly appreciate the vocalists out there that know how to grunt and growl. Necroid really sounds like he is throwing up throughout his songs. In fact, some of his vocals triggered a sympathetic heaving effect and I almost lost my dinner.
Necroid does a cover of Celtic Frost's "Dethroned Emperor." I admit I am not familiar with that song so I can't tell you how well they pulled it off. However, I did put in my copy of Into The Pandemonium and I don't think Necroid sound anything like Celtic Frost. Then I thought if someone sent me an early Celtic Frost CD and told me it was a demo, I would probably give it a pretty low score, too.
Necroid's music is lackluster and the production of their demo is sub par. They seem to be a new band and, fortunately, have time on their side. So I suggest they stick it out for a while and keep practicing and writing more material. They can only get better.
