  • Musashi's Review:
Two things struck me about the envelope containing the Mixomatosis CD. First, it was from Voliac Rock Productions. The name sounded familiar and upon further inspection I realized that they had sent me the Redox demo (without any contact information). Second, I see that Voliac is located in Andorra (a small country located in the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain). I am especially fond of the metal enclave located in Andorra (for more info on Andorra see my review of Among The Mist) because it seems so obscure and random that such a small community would be so into metal. Metal is truly a worldwide phenomenon... at least some kinds of metal.

Look at the cover of this CD! What the fuck is that? I'm gonna hurl. Yuck! Believe me, this is not the worst picture on this digipack. The cool digipack with the eight-page booklet is filled with other disturbing pictures of bloody bodies. Mixomatosis is definitely into some ill shit.

On the back of the digipack is the logo for Quirofano Productions, a Colombian record company that distributes Mixomatosis along with other Death Gore acts such as Dead Infection, Blood, Malignant Tumour, and Fleshless. Apparently the next big worldwide craze is "Gorn" (gore meets pornography) and Quirofano is establishing itself as a force in the Death Gore market. I am certainly a little fascinated, but mostly just disgusted. If Death Gore is your scene, then Quirofano is your company.

Bienvenidos al Mundo del Terror is filled with lots of samples of Spanish newscasts that makes me feel like I am watching the Spanish station on channel 41. Unfortunately, that cool guy in the bee costume doesn't make any cameo appearances on this CD. Of course I have no idea what they are talking about, but I assume it has to do with death or decapitation or something gross.

The music is basically low budget metal core in Spanish with lots of sounds of people getting killed or raped--sort of a third-world Rob Zombie rip off. I do not find it particularly exciting. In fact it is pretty lame. I actually enjoy listening to the people speaking Spanish more than I enjoy the music. "Las Victimas no tienen ninguna relacion (intro)/Resurreccion" is a great example. The intro begins with a sample of two Spanish men that sounds sampled off a bad movie or soap opera. Then the loud music kicks in and the singer or singers just make vomiting noises into the microphone. It works in any language.

I still have not figured out how a band from Spain, a production company in Andorra and a record company in Colombia all managed to get together. It must be the violence that brings people together.

The violence, rape and torture on this album is all very exciting. I highly recommend giving this band a listen if you are dieting. Personally, I have not become so desensitized to sex and violence that I have to turn to this for entertainment. Give it some time.

Did I mention how much I liked the name "Mixomatosis"?
