Lugubrious's Review:
For any genre of music, things after a while start tasting stale. You hear one band, so you check out more bands of a similar style, and soon you are listening to twenty bands that all sound the same. The world of Doom Metal has hundreds of My Dying Bride wanabe's and even more Evoken/Shape of Despair ripoffs than it needs. Mist of the Maelstrom is a refreshing breath of smog, for while this band is undeniably Doom, they, or he, has found a sound all his own.Never have I heard a guitar sound so melancholic. Somehow Mr. Hodson literally made his guitar weep. This is what this style of music is all about, putting you back in your place and reminding you that behind the light we all try to see is an undeniable darkness. While at first this is a little hard to digest and seems odd, after a few listens you begin to realize just how damn depressing these guitar tones are. My complaint, they would sound a lot nicer alongside some crunching, more typical, good ol' heavy Doom riffs. I feel this would possibly give the songs a better balance and the demo an overall full sound. Vocally this is what you should imagine: deep, low, thunderous vocals, with a few spoken/sung parts here and there.
For a one man project this is very impressive, but I do feel an actual drummer and bassist would make this a stronger band. Of course this being Doom Metal, that is easier said than done. Considering what he had to work with he has done a remarkable job and the demo's overall sound is very professional. For a demo, this far surpassed my expectations, as it will yours. Let sadness eternally reign.
