  • Golgotha's Review:
The great mystery to life is why do you listen to music or a certain band? The sad common answers to this are: the fashion, my friends like it the so-why-shouldn't-I-syndrome, or the infamous "why not?" Bands usually have to hit that certain spot in your chest, or in the old medulla oblongata, for them to stick with you, year after year. A huge flaw in society is that it is built on rules of modernism, so when something isn't new or groundbreaking it gets thrown out by those who really have no idea what good it can do. My question to that is, What's wrong with using some old formula, but giving it your own twist?

So here I am in a void free from all critics, because I don't like certain bands, or certain labels. On my quest for something new and exciting, I stumbled across the updated Shape Of Despair site. The News section of the site had a link to this new side project of Shape Of Despair, called The Mist And The Morning Dew. A sextet consisting of members from Finntroll, Shape Of Despair (the new Doom gods), The Seventh Planet, Shaman, and Veera Muhli from the Finnish doom band Unholy. When receiving this demo courtesy of a 150KB/sec transfer rate, I was under the impression that since it was members of Finntroll and Shape Of Despair it would probably be some extreme metal band. My assumption was completely wrong, The Mist And The Morning Dew combine aspects of doom, rock, folk, and even some classical into their very eclectic sound which some would find comparable to a more folk version of Katatonia. Vocals comparable to those of Lacuna Coil, slow and mildly distorted guitars, and folk like acoustic parts, which still can keep the doom-like feeling they are going for.

With the genre of metal being broken down into a plethora of sub genres (which causes a surge of people who claim to know everything), the welcoming of more melodic and non-traditional styles are at an all time high. The Mist And The Morning Dew take full advantage of a great vocalist and combine slow, dream-like music to give themselves a relatively good response. We all look forward to female vocals, but when its something like Thor's Hammer or Arch Enemy, the response just gets killed, because when one thinks of female vocals, they think melodic, soothing sounds that cause goose bumps, not roooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrr "I sound like the dude who sang for the band before I joined."

For a band that has only put out a demo, and rumors to have an LP out soon, they have impressed me so much I just have to give them a 4-skull rating. I give them 4 skulls for the reason of improvement; I don't want to have to give the LP (if it is going to see the light of day) a 5 skull rating, when I originally gave the demo a 5. Therefore I'm in a position of rating the better of the two the same as the other. If it doesn't happen to rock my boat as much as the demo, tough luck, I'll have to live with my past.
    4 out of 5
