Goatwhore's Review:
My, my, my, as soon as I heard the first few seconds of this CD I was sure that I would loathe it. I won't say that I've grown to love it, but loathe it I don't. Meschalina fuse samples with metal and punk inspired guitars into a basic but professional whole that is carried forward with the expected but well-executed rapping. Some of it, quite frankly, is undeniably catchy and enjoyable . . . in the same way that I may enjoy the odd pop song or video game theme. My description of this artist may lead you to believe that this is a nu-metal act, but that really wouldn't be a proper mental image for you. Picture an Italian, less angry Rage Against the Machine (who I've never regarded to be nu-metal, by the way) that experiments with simple but enjoyable electronics and sampling, and you've got a better idea of what these guys are about.
Far from angry they are, and perhaps it's because they are not the stereotypical "angry" nu-metal losers that I initially and quickly judged them to be, that I am enjoying this as much as I am. They are definitely an act that is barely coverable within the scope of Metal Judgment, but for the open-minded folks who aren't exclusively into "pure" metal, you might want to check this out.
The metal backbone in the guitars, the slightly-but-anything-but-black-metal dark approach, and the novice but adventurous approach to electronic experimentation are all factors that leave me satisfied at the end of this demo.
