    Do you dig epic prog metal stuff? Does a Lacuna Coil CD exist in your collection? This review is geared towards you then, you lucky little bastards. Although this is not my favorite niche of sound, I'll try to be as fair as possible, I promise.

    Based out of the U.K., Mercury Rain has successfully released their third album to date: St. Matthieu. The album starts out with the lead vocalist, Sonia, warbling sweet nothings in French. Around her voice is a soundscape of smooth, well-placed synth atmospheres and eerie bells accented here and there. It's songs like this that make me wish I took more french classes in highschool. The rest of the album is comprised of heavy riffs played with exquisite style and technique. I feel that Mortiis could learn a few things from Jon (keyboardist) if he considers recording another album. The only qualm that I have with this album is how the drum tracks were recorded, they sound very distant and heavily triggered. Precision is good for music along the prog vein, but it should still sound somewhat human. All in all St. Matthieu is a well made album. It also features a DVD with some videos and a behind-the-scenes stuff with amazing shots of a castle in Scotland. Check it.
