Martyr's Review:
After listening to Masterlasts's demo Think of the Day, I would generally sum them up as a heavier Guano Apes. So if you're looking for something more along the traditional outline for metal, this might not be for you. The overall mix of this album is very well done, no layers are overbearing, over-processed or poorly recorded. Their frontwoman has an extremely rough and ferocious vocal style going and she definitely does not come across as sweet and lovable. It must be tough growing up in New York. Again, like a few other demos that I've had to review lately, this one is along the nu-metal vein. If you care not to put music into categories allow me break it down for you. These songs have some repetitive riffs that don't really have any emotion to them and they follow the drumbeat like a lost little puppy. This is accompanied by your standard issue "techno beats" which seem to be done by someone who is decently professional at it. It's like something you'd hear on a Linkin Park album. I have to hand it to the bass player on this album though. On their title track "Think of the Day," there is a funky bass line that shows some skill with a good range of notes that complement the music. Add some tribal beats into the mix and there you have it: a band that will sell plenty of shirts at the mall.
