Musashi's Review:
This is the first time I am revisiting a band for a demo review. It's not for lack of material to review, but more to reward and encourage persistence. Personally, I don't think my first Mahavatar review was too scathing. However, I can see why they might want to take another stab at it.I decided to take a walk to Downtime and see them perform again. They are a good band. Tight, heavy and sufficiently dramatic enough to hold my interest. I like what I heard. Unfortunately, the set was only about 5 songs long. Hel and Death walked in just as they were finishing up. Since when do bands actually go on on-time! Karla was nice enough to give us some copies of the new demo, Mind Hypnotic Vision Towards Revolution. MHVTR includes three new songs and a new version of "The Time Has Come."
First things first, I had to find my old version of "The Time Has Come" to compare the two. I find the new version to be much better. The vocals are more dramatic and powerful. The mix is much better; you can hear the bass. The production is cleaner and tighter; there are backing vocals. Overall the new version is much more dynamic and listenable. Although, at 6:52 it tests your patience.
Back to the beginning, the first song "BH" is good. It has a good groove to start the demo with and it has a pretty good chorus. The next track "Open Your Minds" has good staccato rhythm that drives the song forward and keeps me interested. Again, they have put another good chorus together with their riffs. Not to mention, Lizza can actually sing as well as grunt and growl.
"The Time Has Come" takes the third position followed by "The E Song." Unfortunately, "The E Song" is my least favorite. Fortunately, "The E Song" is the last song. The song is not bad in any way, it just sounds like riffs I have heard before and seems a bit generic.
I am very happy to hear bands progress and grow. It sucks when you see a band and realize that they have good potential but their potential is not captured in their recordings. Mahavatar has a really good demo that highlights their strengths as musicians. The more I listen to it the more I look forward to their next gig.
Finally, the artwork is really good. This groups pays attention to the details. Very impressive.
