CD Single - The Time Has Come
Mahavatar is a good band that should be seen if you have the chance. I received a CD with one song on it. I ask myself, "What's the use?" Why go to the trouble of just putting one song on a CD, especially if you are going to go to the trouble of printing a nice insert and a color sticker for the CD? I found listening to the CD troublesome. I just could not bring myself to listen for a full six minutes to "The Time Has Come." Parts of the song sounded good, but it starts slow and doesn't hold your attention. The recording is kind of muddy and flat sounding. Nothing to really speak about. The vocals sounded on key and it sounds like they can play their instruments. Unfortunately, that is all I have to say about the demo. I almost didn't write anything because I couldn't think of enough to say about the one-song demo.Fortunately, together with the CD, Mahavatar also sent me a nice color flyer announcing some shows around New York City. I figured it was probably worth an hour and five dollars to check them out so I could have something to write about. Good thing I did! Mahavatar put on a good show considering they had many hurdles to overcome. First of all, Downtime is not a great room for heavy music. Second, they had a replacement bass player who only had the benefit of about 4 hours rehearsal. Third, they were on a bill with other "bands" that really sucked.
I think the first thing one notices when going to a Mahavatar show is Lizza's ample cleavage. However, there is plenty more to keep one's attention. Lizza is a good performer: she has a good range and presence on stage. Karla shows some good chops on the guitar. I could stand to hear some more solos, but good chunga-chunga rhythms are always welcome. The drummer and bass player also performed well. They were amazingly tight for the limited practice they had. Of course, all the playing doesn't really mean anything if you don't have songs.
Stylistically, I think Mahavatar falls into the quasi-alterna-metal genre occupied by White Zombie, Sevendust and Machine Head. They have some good songs which could stand to be on a real demo CD.
One reason I like New York is because it is a melting pot. In that sense, Mahavatar is a real New York band. The drummer is from Poland, the guitar player is from Jamaica and the singer is from Israel. I believe it is important to support local bands and I think Mahavatar is a welcome addition to the New York metal scene. I look forward to seeing them again. Check them out!
1 skull for the demo
4 skulls for the show
3 skull average
ps - I understand that they are looking for a permanent bass player. Please contact them if you are interested.
