Musashi's Review:
Lugosi's Needle have opened for Burnt by the Sun, Deicide, Nile and Arch Enemy. They also cite such influences as John Zorn, Mr. Bungle, Faith No More and Meshuggah. On paper, Lugosi's Needle is an intriguing band. As always, the real test is how they sound coming out of my speakers. My first impression is a song titled, "Contradicting Misanthropy." I find myself hearing lots of interesting musical parts in this song and some very challenging playing, but am still left somewhat unimpressed overall. Perhaps it is the fact that the vocals are mixed too low and that the overall production is on the muddy and gloomy side.
The next song, "Scarecrow," has a System-of-a-Down-playing-ska vibe to it. It is now becoming obvious that this is going to be an adventurous recording and require some open minded listening on my part. After seven songs, I do feel closer to my own self destruction: mission accomplished, boys.
Lugosi's Needle seems more like a Mr. Bungle tribute band to me. Personally, I prefer my guitars with less reverb and I prefer to have the vocals higher in the mix. I also prefer my music to have a little more focus and coherence. Nonetheless, they are good musicians and play some good music. I tend to like their eclectic style and off-the-beaten-path approach. If you are a fan of Mr. Bungle but wish that they were more metal, then I suggest you get a copy of this CD.
