Hel's Review:
For whatever reason, we seem to get a lot of demos from Finland here at Metal Judgment. Perhaps we have a large following over there, or perhaps there are just that many metal bands in Finland. Whatever the reason, this week we have Lost Detour – yet another Finnish band looking for some feedback. This demo arrived with a scant paragraph of introduction, and the music was simply described as “somekind [sic] of progish melodic metal with clean and growl vocals, a mixture of our influential factors.” Frankly, this is more than many bands bother with, and I was thankful that they included at least this much. This brief description turns out to be surprisingly apt. Cause and Effect is a palatable and easily digestible three song affair, and the songs included have strong structures, are fairly well produced, and are performed with an appropriate skill level. The brief paragraph also tells me that they formed late in 2003 and, for a band that has been together for less than a year, they are a remarkably solid unit.
This demo fails to receive the full five skulls because of flaws that have nothing to do with the music. While I was somewhat frustrated by the lack of information included with the demo, it turns out that the website is truly useless. While they do include MP3s of the three songs from the demo, there is nothing else there. I was hoping they would at least have an image of the cover art, but there wasn’t even that much. No information on the band members either, and though there is a guestbook link, it does not work. I’m not looking for anything elaborate, just a little good old-fashioned information.
Despite my frustration with the lack of information available about the band, these mystery men have created three songs that are well worth listening to. If you like melodic prog without the wimpy keyboards or girlishly high vocals, Lost Detour is the band you’ve been searching for. Definitely stop by their skeletal site to check out the songs, they are definitely worthwhile. Hopefully in the near future they will put a little polish on their packaging as a whole, but musically, they sound ready to be signed right now.
