Kefka X's Review:
Favorite track: "Tool Shed Therapy"To me, generic, brutal death metal has one weakness, and one weakness only: it gets boring very quickly. Sure, it's heavy, it gets a good pit going and it has some great breakdowns, but you can only listen to it for so long before you lose interest. The East Coast scene of brutal death has a tendency to host some great bands that take this stereotype and go beyond with an accessible hook that keeps the listener engaged without being too much of a yawn. See, in order to enjoy this style of metal, you have to accept it for what it is; a quick listen that doesn't break ground but gets the point across while pleasing, if only for a short period of time. Kalopsia is a great example, and their debut, Exquisite Beauty of the Defiled, clearly showcases the point presented. Each of the eight songs on this album is of a moderate length, and is a chock full of riffs that fuse brutality with hook. The breakdowns range from mid-paced to slow and will definitely get your head banging. Typical death metal clichés, such as blast beats and harmonics, are woven into the music but not used excessively or in the wrong places.
If you enjoy bands like Dying Fetus, Misery Index, and Kataklysm, you'll enjoy Kalopsia on a great level. Don't expect to be wowed, just expect Exquisite to be a good brutal release that you can enjoy all the way through and leave it at that.
