  • Goatwhore's Review:
If your idea of a good time is listening to Korn, early Soulfly, mid-career Machine Head, then good for you. That's fine and dandy, but please don't form a band that's dripping from every pore with those influences.

Proficient, well-structured and casually performed, it's obvious that this is a good band. Their vocalist possesses a great screaming voice as well as a unique melodic one (oddly he sometimes kinda sounds like Morgan Lander from Kittie with the melodic vox).

When I say k-again is derivative of other bands that are either full on nu-metal or at least nu-curious, think old school Korn and the best elements of that genre rather than the rap or pop inclined variety of someone like Linkin Park.

Augmented with proficiency in tempo variety, there really is little to dislike, aside from the overly dank, muddy production, courtesy of Logan Mader (Sideshow Bob himself!). Mader does a relatively good job, but there really is no variety of sound captured.

That isn't to say that everything is great. Lyrically, the band for the most part steers clear of the stereotypical down-trodden whining of nu-wankers; however they do delve into that territory with lyrics like, "Can you feel this pain?" from the track "Isolated."

As for the execution of those lyrics, Pigo has some skills, indeed. Sometimes he goes a little far with his admiration of Jonathan Davis in his whisper-to-a-scream approach. But he goes off the deep end when he does the pseudo-scat thing (that Davis had ripped off - and poorly at that - from God, I mean Mike Patton himself).

I'll probably listen to this release a few more times simply for the vocals. But after that, my puppy Brownie now has his first Frisbee.
    3 out of 5
