Kefka X's Review:
Compilations are undoubtedly one of the greatest innovations in the history of the consumer world of music. Their price ranges from free to ridiculously cheap (at the most I’ve seen a comp go for $5.99 at a retail store), the range of genres of bands tends to be very diverse and covers a large spectrum of fans, and it’s just a great way to discover new acts. Just Promotions, a small industry targeting the Worchester area of Massachusetts, has put out a 2-disc compilation of unsigned bands, ranging from all possible genres that metal has to offer, including death grind to *cringe* synthpop grindcore…?The compilation in total holds 14 bands with two songs apiece. The only information that is given on each band is a website. Through listening to this compilation, I realize why most of these bands aren’t signed on to a label. The music really doesn’t stand out, at all. At the best, a few of these bands could be possible mid-tier material. Instead of writing a 20-page review on each individual band, I’ll just note a few bands that stuck out in my mind.
Zakas: Really bizarre yet humorous fusion of every genre of metal possible. I can hear major influences of Strapping Young Lad, Ministry, Ill Niño and Mr. Bungle. Wait… is this a spaced-out keyboard solo? Add Dream Theater to that list. This band is very difficult to explain but is undoubtedly the standout band on the compilation.
Girl Scout Hand Grenade: Industrial death metal. Very heavy and in your face. One of their songs reminds me of “Cod Metal King,” a classic cut from Strapping Young Lad’s debut album. The monotone female vocals give the music an eclectic feel.
Estrogenocide: Refer to my previous demo review of this band. It’s unfortunate that I had to endure this band for a second time, but it brought back many fond memories… of being drunk with friends and having something to poke fun at.
Of course, I’m not saying that this compilation is a waste of your time. No compilation is a waste of your time. If you’re expecting a collection of metal that’s of Century Media-caliber, you might be fooling yourself. Check it out anyway, some of these bands may appeal to you. Most of them did not appeal to me. Below I’ve listed each band with links to their websites if you’d like to do some further research and discover some new tunes.
