  • Musashi's Review:
This is like an X-File. Somewhere in Wachspreague, Virginia, is a man that time forgot. I am baffled by the pictures. J.D. Bradshaw appears to have been kept in some form of stasis for the past 15 years. I did not even know that Carvin was still sponsoring anybody, but apparently Mr. Bradshaw is Carvin's secret weapon.

I got the four song CD which was supposedly released in 1998. You could easily be lead to believe that this has been in his attic since 1988. I got several photos of J.D. with different Carvin guitars. I got a thick ream of paper with every review that he has had written about him including correspondence with the reviewers. Although I usually do not read other reviews before I write my own, I was compelled to thumb through the many pages of reviews and read what people had to say. Most of it was, surprisingly, very good.

The influences are Ace Frehley, Vinnie Moore, Yngwie Malmsteen and Joe Satriani. You can hear all of these influences on this demo. In fact, J.D. is so good at imitating the styles of his heroes that he really does not develop his own sound or character. "Coolin' Out" is the first song and it is reminiscent of Satriani. The melody, the chord progression, and the song structure are all Satriani. The only difference is the guitar tone. Satriani does not play Carvin.

The second track "Beltane" is out of the Yngwie songbook. J.D.'s playing does not sound at all like the crazy Swede. J.D. is fast and very clean but lacks the wild vibrato and phrases his solos differently. However, the Swedish influence is more than apparent.

Like his idol Satriani, J.D. makes the mistake of singing on "All The Way." This song sounds like some studio outtake from Ratt, Poison or early Crue. Finally, the song "Blue 135" closes the CD. Let me just say this: NO MORE BLUES!!! I am a lover of the blues, but I would die a happy man if I never heard another bad blues recording. In my opinion, if you're not Albert or B.B. King, don't even bother. They've said it all.

Mr. Bradshaw is technically and excellent guitar player. However, I was left with the impression that despite all the technical prowess which he displays, he has not been able to channel any of his own true feelings or emotions into his music. When I want to listen to Satriani, I listen to Satriani. I bought his CDs because I thought he had something to say. The same goes for Yngwie. I have to ask J.D., "It's already been done, so why bother?" He's a good guitar player, but so what? If you don't have anything to say with your instrument, then put it down and go read a book.
