  • Abyss' Review:
Is it cold in here? Imperial Crystalline Entombment are an impressive black metal outfit. I.C.E is a three-song mini-cd that was recorded in Iceland (appropriate, no?), but I believe the actual band hails from the good old US of A (Maryland, to be exact). It also says that these songs were written and recorded during the great winter of Ravaskeiths’ 8th eclipse… so they’ve got that going for them. (I don’t speak a lick of Icelandic, which I guess is a language (?), but I think ‘Ravaskeith’ translates to ‘Keith’s Rave’, meaning there were a lot of drugs present, which might go a little way towards explaining this band’s look. At least that’s the rumor I’m spreading.)

The band consists of members Bleak, Blisserred, IceSickKill, and Mammoth (I guess a guy named ‘Abyss’ can’t really make fun of them). Now I want you to look again at the names of the members of this band and the name of the band itself… don’t worry, I’ll wait. Do you sense a theme here? Well I’ll tell you… the band has centered their visual and musical landscapes around, you got it… hot dogs. No, I mean ice. All kidding aside, this band is quite good. The visual presentation on this disc is stunning in all its blue and white glory, showing the band is quite serious even if I am not.

The music is sick black metal delivered icily cold. And while their persona is bleak and barren, the music itself is full of life, a cold, hating type of life, but life nevertheless. The music really slays, and is one of the better self-produced black metal releases I’ve heard, maybe it has something to do with the eclipse. Its sound is thick, pummeling, relentless and bleak, but is also meticulous, well thought out, and focused. One word review: Cool (duh)
