  • Musashi's Review:
This band describes their sound as progressive, dark metal with some grindcore and black metal. It made me think of the email I just got which listed the 101 rules of black metal. I thought I would go through some of these rules and see how Human Abstrakt rates.

Rule number 1, "Don't be gay." I take issue with this rule because I think black metal is kind of gay, but, hey, I don't make the rules. These guys sound straight to me.

Rule number 6, "Be simultaneously grim and necro if at all possible." These guys are definitely grim. The song titles "Vice" and "Selfish" kind of give it away. The picture of the woman with the crazy eyes with her arms crossed like a corpse on the cover of the demo looks fairly necro to me, so I am convinced that they are trying to be both grim and necro.

Rules number 14, 16 and 73, "Don't be Dani Filth." This is a rule that we must all try to adhere to like a commandment from the Bible.

Rule number 19, "Sodomize a virgin whore." This rule struck me as a bit of an oxymoron. How can one be both a virgin and a whore? Regardless, I find that the Human Abstrakt demo is extremely lacking in any sort of sodomy of whores, virgin or otherwise. Therefore, I will have to deduct one skull from their score.

Rule number 57, "All logos must include illegible writing and at least one inverted cross and/or pentagram. This is non-negotiable." Well, the logo is illegible and the spelling is bad, but they just don't have enough inverted crosses or pentagrams.

Rule number 87, "If possible, design the title of your album so that it consists of three completely unrelated words. Dimmu Borgir is the master of this (i.e. Enthrone Darkness Triumphant, Spiritual Black Dimensions, Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia, Godless Savage Garden) but you may also want to refer to Immortal's Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism." Having an untitled demo is just bad form in the black metal world. I certainly think that HA could have spent a little time putting a title to this two song demo: something like "Black Mourning Would".

Rule number 88, "As we all know, women have no place in the homoerotic world of black metal, but if your girlfriend still won't stop bugging you about wanting to be involved in your band, give her a lame spoken word part or something." Apparently, HA are so straight that they can't get girlfriends. Or perhaps they are so "true" that they would not allow their vision to be marred by some lame spoken word crap. Either way, kudos to them!

Rule number 89, "Never form a band containing you, your wife and/or girlfriend, and some gay looking guy." This is such a good rule I just had to make sure you all read it and took note. HA get major points for staying true to this rule.

Rule number 98, "In order to make your recording more incomprehensible and therefore more "cult", be sure to either select a singer who has only a tenuous grasp on the language to be sung. (Acceptable languages: Norwegian, Latin or Orcish.)" Hey, they left out Canadian! I can't understand a word those guys say. I think HA have definitely violated this rule by allowing Danny Carwile to sing with his thick American accent. He could never be mistaken for a Norwegian. How do they expect to fit in?

Rule number 99, "I'll tell you what your album layout needs...Some titties." Once again, this is a rule that we must all adhere to like a commandment from the Bible and it's an easy way to get yourself a couple of more skulls on your review score.

Rule number 101, "You mean to tell me you read this whole thing when you could've have been prancing about in the forest with an axe? For shame! For shaaaaame!!" I just think this is funny.

In their effort to be more progressive, Human Abstrakt have broken some of the rules with respect to black metal. That's okay. They are a good band and have a good sound. Infernal Hail!!!!
