Metal Militia's Review:
This demo starts off really bad, I mean when I popped it into my player I thought it would be suckage of massive proportions, and although Synthesis turned out to be just an average dose of suck I am still shocked that Hecates actually won recording time at some sort of festival.Let's start off with all the unimportant stuff. The press kit is good enough. The bio sheet has adequate information, band history, web site (which only has an intro page) e-mail address, etc. More than decent, but that's about the only part of Hecates that is above average.
The best way I can describe Hecates is Faith No More attempting to play death metalish type music and failing. The vocalist tries his hardest to sound like Patton, and there are times when he actually sounds pretty good. When he is doing the growly, screechy stuff it sounds like something Patton might try and is kind of cool, however where everything goes down the shitter is when this guy breaks into his clean vocals. They are horrible. Out of tune, annoying and unbearable. On top of that most of the lyrics are really really dumb. I know I say that a lot, but these lyrics really are some of the worst I've heard in a long time.
The music is much like the lyrics, there are some cool parts, but an overabundance of sucky parts. Again when I hear this I think of Faith No More, except trying some sort of weird death metal type music, but I just can't get into it. Maybe Hecates just haven't established themselves enough to play this style right yet, but I can tell that the lead guitarist has a considerable amount of talent. I think if they spend some more time practicing and writing some better songs then they might have something somewhat enjoyable on their hands.
