Pouring forth from my speakers is a unique blend of thrash, hardcore and 70’s groove all wrapped up in the mind-numbing fuzz of a stoner rock jam. There is something completely fresh about the resultant sound. The compositions are almost schizophrenic in their disparity, yet they are woven together so fluidly as to be perfectly unaware of their own shifting focus.

The varied influences heard in this music are like an amalgamating union of completely different affinities. It sounds as if each member of this band introduced a slightly different focus to the music, and each piece is tempered evenly enough as to never outshine the next. This makes it impossible for me to easily categorize the Boston band Gut in any single sub-genre, but I think that is actually a good thing. We really don’t need any more distinctions. I am happy enough to have something to listen to that sounds exactly like the name on the cover reads. If I had to draw a comparison for you, I guess it would be with a combination of Japan’s Sigh and No Rest For The Dead (also Japanese). But that is the closest audile approximation I can deliver here.

This emerging heavy metal outfit is fairly new to the scene, but I do not believe any of its members actually are. Even on this 4-track recording, the veteran musicianship is apparent. The songwriting is simple yet inventive, easily spinning fully infectious riffs and grooves. The only problem with the sound is with the recording itself, in that the high hat sounds a little too loud and sometimes distorted. Overall the mix and production is excellent for a recording of this kind. To me it actually sounds like a fully produced live recording, sans crowd noise.

As the sounds continue to emanate from my speakers slamming seamlessly from thrash to hardcore to groove all within a single minute, I find I like this EP more and more. Gut is on to something very cool with the sound of this well appreciated self-produced demo, and I truly believe that any big fans of thrash, hardcore, groove or stoner rock could appreciate these orchestrations. It may take a few listens to get used to (at least it did for me), but it will be time well spent. I personally can’t wait to hear more.
