Metal Militia's Review:
Reviewing demos is probably the hardest task the reviewer has, first of all one has no idea what to expect when first spinning the demo. When I first started this job I had high hopes, I imagined getting some three or four song demos from some unknown bands who would pummel my ass into dust. I wanted to be amazed by what I was hearing, and as time grew on and I labored my way through more and more demos I was amazed. Not by the great talent that was being put in front of me, but by the amazing amounts of feces that people actually had the gall to send away for critical examination. It seems as if every ten demos I get, ten are beyond terrible. This is what makes the demo reviewer's job so difficult. How many different synonyms are there for shit? I can only negatively describe music a limited amount of times before it sounds like I am repeating myself. So in the rare instances when I am sent a demo that isn't degenerate garbage unfit even for untermenschen I am content. It gives me an opportunity to exercise adjectives from the other side of the spectrum that I so rarely get to apply in the realm of reviewing. Greyswan has provided me with such an opportunity and for that alone they should be praised.Hailing from Italy, Greyswan play "gothic" metal. Now normally I would dismiss such a group because "gothic" usually means cheesy, boring, stupid, vampire fellating homo-garbage. However Greyswan manage to transcend all this and create something pretty damn impressive. Each track is dark and depressing, creating a painfully melancholic feeling once the last track has finished. What surprises me the most is that each track is over seven minutes in length, and not once did I find myself skipping through the tracks. In fact the three tracks flow together seemlessly making the demo more like one piece with three movements rather than three separate works.
The first track, "Sleepless Night" is the strongest, starting off with keyboards playing a simplistic depressing nursery rhyme, the song progresses into an atmospheric, ambient vein and is quite moving. The second track is almost more upbeat, it presents a lighter atmosphere, but is actually very sinister in nature. Raspy vocals and eerie guitar and keyboards make this track haunting and beautiful at the same time. The final track comes in and is just hopelessly depressing, slow and painful and ends on a most chilling note.
This is a great beginning for this band. I have not heard something as depressing and gloomy as this on a demo before. Keep an eye out for these guys, their full length came out in 2003, and if these three tracks are any indication, then the full length should be suicide-inspiring.
