  • Lugubrious's Review:
Raw Black Metal, you either love it or hate it. Personally, I'm one of those people that you would have to ask on a certain day. Sometimes the raw production, shitty vocals, silly corpse paint, and songs about trolls in the woods and Satan's hairy anus just make me laugh. On other days, a dark shadow will cross over me, and only the echos from those souls damned to hell will do.

Gravespawn is everything you would expect. No surprises here folks, this seven track demo is Christ Raping Black Metal. The dark soul who composed this orchestrated chaos is named Rellik Sephiroth, and he has been sent by Big D himself to spread the message that the day of reckoning is coming. Scared yet?

Let's do this on a points system. As said, he has an evil, scary name, that's ten kvlt points. He has a Burzum (who I hate) cover, another ten kvlt points. The production is, you guessed it, shitty. Another ten points, bringing us to thirty. Does the logo have a pentagram? Check, but no upside down crosses, so they only get eight for that. This little Satanic demo is titled Thus Reigns the Imperial Order of Tartaros, of course another ridiculously long title giving them another eight points. Sorry guys, that name was just not blasphemous enough. The keyboards do exist, but only to create a terrifying atmosphere. Some say keys are not kvlt though, so no points.

The other forty points will be based off the actual music. Well this is not very original, but the songs are actually bearable. I still don't have a headache, even after hearing his mom fake an orgasm on track three which is titled, get ready for this, "Your Complete Guide on how to Stalk a Virgin for a Satanic Sacrifice Ritual." The songs tend to be somewhat long in length, and things can actually get quite interesting during certain points. He has the traditional catchy black metal chorus in some songs which I love. The guitars, despite sounding as if they were created on some computer program, seem to be somewhat interesting. It is all a matter of getting past the production. I don't hear much going on with the drums though, besides a cymbal being hit every few seconds and the typical double bass. Still this is definitely one of the better bands to come out of this scene. Fortunately, unlike most, he's not the typical buffoon who thinks Satan himself sent him here to spread the word of evil. He actually has some intelligence, behind all the paint. With some better production and some minor changes he could easily become a force to deal with in the oh-so-evil Black Metal scene.
