Snake's Review:
First, if you are a band trying to make a name for yourselves, do not, I repeat, do not send a 3 song sampler to a music magazine, whether it is in print or on the internet, to be reviewed especially when you are soon releasing a complete full length. You disrespect those you want to help promote your music. You also make me think you sent your strongest efforts and kept everything else because it's crap. Why not wait until a promo version of the full length is available? Anyway, I have three songs to work with: "Devil Ride," "Live Before You Die," and "God Damn." The signer wants to be a Black Sabbath era Ozzy, and the guitar player tries not to freak out as the acid kicks in. The drummer is stoned. The infantile drum solo on this track made me laugh. My two year old son could have thrown together some more interesting beats and with rhythm to boot than this skin bumbler. Some leftover shake is mixed with seeds, rolled up into a joint and lit. It tastes like weed, but when the seeds heat and pop it leaves a sterile taste in your mouth - as is the same with The Goddamned. Now, these guys obviously don't care about my opinion on their music, but they need to keep their day jobs unless they are selling joints at their concerts, too. You would have to be stoned to miss all the blundered guitar notes and missed cues on "Live Before You Die." Now, some moments are puff dragon magic where the music and vocals cross over into the ethereal cartoon realm, but for my tastes I want it way deeper. These guys let all their mistakes and piss poor studio engineering hang out there. Just listening to the track "God Damn," I wonder what the hell they were thinking. The bass plugs in, starts a rhythm and then the amp fizzles out just as the song starts. There is no attempt to bring it back or even to rerecord the track. I guess the studio album is about what you get live, unrehearsed and unprofessional.
These guys want your hard earned bud in trade for their generic stoner bong riffs; unfortunately for The Goddamned there are just too many other premium, kind-quality stoner metal/rock bands for us to get high with. If you can't get some 70's era Hawkwind or Goatsnake, and you're scraping the bottom of your pipe, then maybe you might want to hit it with The Goddamned. Two stoned skulls, and god damn that's all they're getting from my bag.
