Martyr's Review:
"Why do they come to me to die?" I've learned a few things from becoming a "critic" in the metal music field. One thing I've learned, if something negative is written about a musicians material, it generally gets taken as a personal insult. I whole heartedly believe that a lot of these musicians put a lot of effort into their works, can a little constructive criticism hurt? I know that some writers tend to over emphasize poor musicianship, I as well am guilty. But if you were to present your demo to a record company, and they said the same thing, what would you do?I wasn't completely thrilled with Gaspanic's seven song demo, Step on the Gas. This project is comprised of two members; Akira Naito and Minako Shimazaki. There wasn't a lot of information to be found for this band, and I didn't even come across many reviews of their demo on the internet. I do know that Akira moved to California to pursue a career in music, possibly because of its dense breeding ground for talent and creativity.
Talent. Few have it, many think they were born with it.
Enough rambling. The major complaint I have with this album is the vocal style. Throughout the album the vocals are comprised of a raspy hardcore style with no obvious range. It just kills everything it's paired with.
There is also some Euro-warbling, don't question the term IT MAKES SENSE! Maybe if you picture David Bowie doped up and attempting to sing like Jim Morrison, you might understand what I mean. I do however commend this duo for their guitar work. Akira's solid thrashy riffs are complimented by Minako's more feminine melodic moments. As the norm with many demos, I found most of the songs to be kind of thrown together in hopes of coherency, most of the time this effort failed. The songs were vague and weak, like many of my reviews. I found no real flow to the album and the lack of a live drummer didn't help in the slightest. Drum machines are starting to piss me off big time. If you can't do it right, don't do it AT ALL! There were some cool sounds on the intro that reminded me of Zelda but they don't work in the grand scheme of things. My advice, don't pick up this demo.
