Lugubrious's Review:
Initial impressions can be deceiving. It would be quite easy to fool yourself into thinking this is a hardcore band, but it is not. One may also say this is Black Metal, but they would soon be crucified in the name of Odin. No, Funeral Pyre is not Black Metal, Hardcore, Death Metal, Melodic Death, or even Metalcore. They are simply Funeral Pyre, a band unashamed of each influence that comes through in their music. While this may not work for others, Funeral Pyre pulls it off in such a way that going in one musical direction would sound fake.Within seconds of putting this album in, the negative energy is injected into your veins. Your neck muscles tense and ache for the sensation of thrashing your head around like a madman. Speed is the name of the game, and they have plenty of it. All this genre bending can be a little confusing though. It seems at parts they are unsure of themselves. This is often the problem with bands who want to intermix different styles, some pieces of the puzzle do not fit no matter how hard you squeeze them together.
The keyboards above all seem to be the bastard child. At times they are lurking in the shadows, menacing yet innocent. Like a child though, they seem to scream for attention when it is really not necessary. As with most bands that utilize keyboards, they seem to take away from the other instruments in the band. While the guitarists seem to have some interesting riffs, for the better part of the album they are unable to stand out. The drums themselves seem to be more for keeping the beat than astonishing the listener. While they are definitely fast, speed is not everything. These few minor discrepancies are what make this album better than average instead of great.
The Funeral Pyre is part of a new breed of metal. This new sound combines underground sensibilities while still sounding fresh. Along with others of the same skin they are no doubt a metal band of the new century. Behold the future, and let darkness reign.
