Musashi's Review (6/27/01):
I am thankful that some people care about me enough to give me demos that they think I will actually like. Cyn, our fabulous photographer, asked me to review Foiled Again. I don't think they are related to the punk rock band in Texas. I think they are from New York because they recorded in New York and have a New York area code. I don't have much to go on except for the CD. The booklet is black and white and all the artwork is all hand-drawn by the guys in the band. It looks cool.Of course, like most metalcore bands, Foiled Again have sampled a bunch of movies as intros to the songs. I'm getting tired of that but I still liked the samples. The recording is really well done. In fact, it's one of the better recordings I've heard in a while. The production and sound quality is excellent. This is one of the demos/independent releases that is really an EP and should be sold as such. Eric Enjem who recorded this also recorded bands like Locked In A Vacancy and Proof Of Purchase. He seems to have a good feel for hardcore and is able to produce recordings that are very clean yet still very heavy.
The only thing I don't like about this CD is when the vocalist actually tries to sing. He doesn't seem to know his limitations. The vocalist can scream and growl with the best of them, but when it comes to carrying a tune, he should think about hiring someone else. Otherwise, the music is really strong. It's top-notch metalcore. Very thrashy and powerful with some deep grooves.
Overall this CD appeals to my metal sensibilities and I find it to be an extremely enjoyable demo to listen to. All the songs are heavy and kick ass. The guitars are very heavy and there is some good riffing throughout. This is a very powerful CD from begining to end. I don't think Foiled Again are breaking any new ground in this genre, but they are cranking out some good heavy music and should not go unnoticed.
