  • Hel's Review:
Believe it or not, I'd actually heard of the small burg of Bemidji, MN prior to receiving this demo in the mail. A long lost high school friend of mine relocated there years ago, prior to falling off the face of the earth. Never in all my days did I ever dream I'd get a demo by a metal band from this town, let alone one with enough gumption to get themselves over to Sweden to record with Fredrick Nordström at Studio Fredman. But file this one in the "Wonders Never Cease" folder, in the subsection "It's a Small World After All."

The gentlemen of The Fifth Sun have put together a very professional looking and sounding album, consisting of nine tracks of death metal, with a melodic bent and occasional touches of black. The packaging is a full color digipak and, like the recording, it was obviously put together with a lot of dedication and love. It was the package that caught my eye while I was digging for a demo this week, but it is the music inside that will leave listeners astounded and amazed.

First of all, you would probably never entertain the notion that this was a band from the U.S. from just listening to the album. The songwriting has a strong European feel, and is executed beautifully by the extremely talented members of the band. One and all, these guys play their instruments with admirable skill.

Everything about this band is impressive. Their music is good, and performed well, the packaging is amazing, and the fact that they took themselves over to Sweden to record this album is mind-blowing. The Fifth Sun is clearly dedicated to making their dream a reality despite their geographic disadvantage. According to their website, they now have a new drummer and the band recently made another trek to Studio Fredman to record their next effort, again using their own personal funds to do so. In my book, The Fifth Sun is already a success story. The question is now: What label is going to step up and sign them?
