  • Hel's Review:
A metal band from Eugene, Oregon?! I never thought I'd see the day. I have a good friend who grew up in Eugene, I've visited Eugene, and I have long been under the impression that only crunchy granola types thrive there. It appears I've been mistaken about that.

Eve's 2nd Sin is indeed from Oregon and they are a metal band. This is not the only contradiction I found while familiarizing myself with this band. The second contradiction was between the obvious care they took in creating the packaging inside the cd and the lack of any other materials enclosed with it. I generally expect a band that puts the time into creating a logo, taking a nice professional-looking photo for the cover, laying out all the lyrics and thanks into a glossy tri-fold booklet, to also send a bio and other assorted hype. Believe it or not, it aids your demo to tell us about yourself, it makes the overall experience more personal. Instead, I received a polite letter with the logo across the top requesting this review and including contact information, which is essential when sending your demo out, but nothing else.

Another contradiction, all the songs have lyric credit, and they have an extensive listing of all their equipment choices, but nowhere do I find who is responsible for the music, which is the most important part. Even if it's only a statement saying the band wrote all the music together, be sure to include it! My final contradiction is not really a contradiction at all, just the opposite of what I had expected. There is one woman in the band, and generally, when that is the case, she is the singer. Not in Eve's 2nd Sin. Here, she is a pretty shredding guitar player and doesn't sing at all, except for some nice un-credited backups on one song, which I am assuming was her.

The music was solid, with lots of 80s thrash influence and maybe some hardcore in there too. The vocalist's style is mainly a hardcore-ish shout, and frankly, I just don't fancy that type of thing. Beyond the occasional crash and snare, I can't hear the drums at all through the mix, and the bass suffered largely the same fate. It's all much too muddled. But this seems to always be the case with demos, doesn't it? The guitar sound is the only thing which is clear most of the time, besides the omnipresent vocals, and that is a good thing. As a matter of fact, it's the best thing about the band, as far as I can tell from this demo. All in all it is a very nice effort.
