Musashi's Review:
Despite my lifelong campaign against the Canadians, they persist in sending us material for review. I can't understand why they don't get the hint already. I was feeling particularly vicious this morning and wanted to crank out a review really fast so I reached into the bag and found a return address from Canada. Perfect. I could go off on this without even listening to the CD! Then after inspecting the full color, multi-paneled insert I realized that this independent release actually looked quite professional. Okay, maybe I will have to listen to the CD.The CD begins with "Vision In Transparency," a grand overture which sets the mood for the dark, prog, black metal frenzy that is to ensue. Wow, this actually sounds pretty good. The recording is excellent. The sound is lush. The keyboards are a little much for me, but really lend a warm quality to the recording. After "Vision" I was hoping this would lean more towards prog, but it turns out to me much more black metal.
The musicianship is very strong. The drums are very fast and the guitars are very heavy. I could stand more guitar solos and a little less keyboards, but I am really impressed by how good these guys play and how good the album sounds. I would not have guessed that this was an independent release. Evanescent Soul is good enough to be a released on any metal label.
They list influences such as Type O Negative, Emperor, Carcass, Devin Townsend, King Diamond and My Dying Bride. They definitely have a sound that will put them into a league with all these bands. Unfortunately, I don't think their lyrics make a damn bit of sense. At heaven shore will never to return, All minds obey to the master of the chains, Unified in the none from illusive birth, With disable spirit of the bionic brain -- from the song "Bleeding Wall." What is that aboot, eh?
Other than the nonsensical lyrics, Evanescent Soul is a great band. I think this a great sounding independent release. If you are looking for something new and black, try them out.
