Kefka X's Review:
Oh man, where to start...OK, Estrogenocide (consisting of members Moe Lester and P.D. Phelia) claims that they're a synthpopgrindcore band, with influences such as Napalm Death and Depeche Mode. Unfortunately, there are absolutely no traces of either band on this demo. Let's start with the grindcore "aspect" of the band: there is none. There are absolutely no guitars whatsoever on this recording. Instead, they are replaced by some synthesizers of the worst kind. One synthesizer in fact. And the keyboards in this are very, very basic. The "riffs" sound like basic piano exercises you played in elementary school. There were parts in the demo where I thought they were going to go into a breakdown of "Hot Cross Buns." Some bands this might work with (Burzum's ambient work) but hey, let's face it, they do it a hell of a lot more tastefully than this one does.
Do you like gutturals and screams? Cool so do I! And they're not here. The vocals on this album are just plain horrible. It sounds like a laughable version of Trent Reznor whispering. The lyrical concepts make the vocals even worse, reminiscent of bands like Anal Cunt and Meatshits. The only difference is that it doesn't come off as comical. "Your Bloody Anus Makes Me Laugh" and "Rape, Murder, Rape" are examples of some of the song titles on this 7-song demo.
The CD artwork is even sillier than the rest of the album's concept. The cover, liner notes, and the disc itself are all colored in a hot pink (scroll up to the album cover on this page to see what I mean). The front cover is graced with two red roses (a Violator reference, maybe?), and inside you see pictures and cartoons of people getting married (a reference to Duran Duran's Wedding Album?). The fact that the song titles are imposed on the back of the CD is humorous, but if you can find more about this demo that's comical then let me know.
This recording is so horrible I don't know what to make of it. I want to think that it's a really bad joke but at the same time I'm scared that these guys are serious. Honestly though, I was really interested in the concept of fusing synth and grind together, but I guess this isn't the band to do it. Oh well, good thing it's only seven songs.
