Martyr's Review:
Much like historical movie icons who have passed away in their prime, Black Metal in its early stages should have followed suit. This isn't intended to be an insult, rather a wish for preservation of something that should not be reincarnated. My advice? Instead of emulating what you love, blaze your own fucking path. This is my debut demo review and I'm already loathing this vile little four letter d-word.Encrimson'd is a black metal/folk act based out of none other than the U.S. of A., in Minnesota no less. This union of souls came to be in the year 1999 and have felt grim and inspired ever since. Even college couldn't stop them. Members that have their hand in this musical endeavor include Shaun Koelsch (Guitars), Jared Mason (Drums) and Chris Danecek (Bass and Vocals). ph34r tH3m.
In 2004 Encrimson'd self-financed their first full length album bearing the title Agrarian Menace. You may ask what agrarian means? Well, it is relating to agricultural or rural matters. Crop Circles anyone? Hmm. At first glance, you may notice the sub-par production (what could you really expect? It's a demo. Even some of Opeth's demos sound like shit) and poorly executed vocals (mixed too high). Actually, it sort of reminds me of my last minute, half-assed review writing technique, hmmm. The material on this album is decent but it's nothing I haven't heard before. Am I jaded yet? You have your standard-issue super fast picked riffs, rolling drum beats, blast beats and some hearty folk interludes. Maybe if they got picked up by a major label and were given some guidance and a professional kick in the ass, they could gain some noteriety.
To this day black metal is ever evolving, almost to the point that it yields another sound completely. Take Dodheimsgard or Arcturus for instance. Although these founding bands may stray from their origin, they don't stain the legacy of what once was. Overall, the originators of the black metal scene have been portraying their innovative ideas with audacity and charisma for ten years or more. Let's leave it to them shall we?
