Musashi's Review:
Death and I went to CBGB's last week to see some bands and The Dying Light happened to be one of them. They gave me their demo and I liked them so much, I decided to write about them this week. This is a simple homemade, four-song demo, done in their home studio and has a simple red paper booklet they drew up themselves with all their basic information, lyrics and some cool pictures of guns and JC being nailed to the cross. It's nothing fancy to look at, but it packs a punch. As I hit play on the CD player, I am immediately aware that these guys can play their instruments. The drums are fast and the guitar riffs are furious. I am suddenly self conscious of my own lack of practice as I hear the kinetic pulse of sixteenth and thirty-second notes. For a second I feel I might lose control of my bowels, but I regain my composure.
Eddie and Joey used to play in Cattle Press together. For The Dying Light Capizzi has hung up his bass in favor of the guitar. Thank Satan, because he shreds Kerry King style. The riffs that Eddie and Joey come up with are evil--fucking evil. This is much more metal than Cattle Press which leaned more towards hardcore. The Dying Light are metal.
The drummer, Brandon Thomas, also plays in Dim Mak and he is a force. Most recordings do not do justice to drummers, this is no exception. Seeing Brandon play live, really makes you appreciate him. He beats the drums like a pimp beats his ho. Brandon Diaz keeps everyone together with his heavy bass playing, but does not get in the way of the guitar and drums.
Lino's vokills are very powerful as he sings lines like, "I challenge this God to come forth. You shall be destroyed mercilessly by these hands now, once and for all!" You know this is some evil shit you are listening to.
The problem with this demo is that the songs keep getting better. "Blood Bath" is the first song and it is heavy and has a great guitar solo in it, but the fourth song "Megalomania" is probably the best. The Morbid Angel and Slayer influences are apparent throughout the demo. These guys are sick. If they could sacrifice a goat onstage, they would. I suggest you check them out and get yourself one of these demos.
