Musashi's Review:
To be honest, I do not really have a rhyme or reason to my demo selection process. I work on the assumption that my natural selection process mimics the haphazard way that A&R people listen to demos. So do not fret if your demo has not been reviewed, it will probably find its way to the top of the pile sooner or later. If you want to increase your odds, you can bombard me with emails or more demos, but be forewarned it could have the opposite effect of causing your demo to be trashed. Some discretion is advised.I bring all this up because this week I actually spent some time picking through demos and rejected a couple. I was looking at the website for one band that I was going to review and saw that they lost two members of the band. I decided not to review a band that might have drawn its last breath. Then I rejected a band based on the fact that they appeared to be doing a little too well to be put in the demo category. Although I have reviewed bands that have distribution deals or their own labels, I thought maybe I could find a band that was a little more unattached.
That brings me to Dropface. Poking around through the demo bag I thought their envelope had sufficient heft to warrant further investigation. Immediately upon looking in the envelope I saw cool professional looking artwork. Good start. The material was the basic stuff: a 4 song CD, a band photo, lyric sheets, bio, some reviews, and a laminate. Furthermore, I can see that they have an agent and also are represented by a prominant attorney who I know by reputation. Although that in and of itself is not sufficient pedigree, it does signal that are slightly more connected and more serious than the majority of other bands out there.
The silver and red logo is very reminiscent of Slipknot. The music is too-- although Dropface manages to play music with only four members in the band and no masks or jumpsuits. Nonetheless, the influence is there. As musicians, the members of Dropface are very competent... downright good. The music is hard and heavy. The vocals are Durstian-- lots of profanity and misplaced anger (why should I go fuck myself?). The music is generic but good-- Quaker Instant Mosh. Despite the fact that I really can't get excited over their songs, the music is perfect for K-Rock. Get these guys some matching jumpsuits and sign them to Roadrunner.
