Musashi's Review:
Despite being from Canada, Dook is no Soulscar. I, like most Americans, am suspicious of our so-called “friends” to the north. They seem normal enough but there is just something, I don’t know, un-American about them.First of all, there is the language problem. I know Americans are rather self centered and expect everyone to learn English. It’s a flaw, but nobody really minds except the French. So I open up this demo and read the bio and it’s in English, or is it? The bio they sent me reads as follows:
"Dook was formed in may 2000 by Sebastien Ducap (signer). Not to long after, Nathalie Baril (bass) joint the project. Having the same goals and same ideas of Sebastien, Nathalie was immediatly enthousiam to join Dook. Just recently a drummer and a guitar player have joinned the group; Alexandre Mas and Luc Vachon.”In case you are wondering, I typed it exactly as it was written. And, yes, the rest of the bio is equally as well written. They cleverly changed some of the most glaring mistakes on the version that is on their website, however, it is still pretty bad.
Otherwise, the presentation looks good. Black and white poster, one page bio, black & white pictures and the CD is in a shrink-wrapped paper sleeve. I, of course, take note of the good looking bass player. Good looking female bass players is a cliché that I will probably never tire of.
According to the bio, they are inspired by Pantera, Slipknot and Sepultura. I do not hear anything that reminds me of those bands. They remind me of Nine Inch Nails with their distorted vocals. The production is weak considering the genre is more dance influenced techno metal than anything else. I expect to hear richer and lusher recordings smothered in effects when I listen to this music. Nonetheless, Dook manages to get their ideas across very well. It’s rare when I think a band should have a keyboard player, but I think Dook could probably stand to incorporate a keyboard in their already richly textured sound.
As far as demos go, Why On Me? is good. Technically, seven songs are too many for a demo. But hey, who’s counting? They are a good band. They play well. They sound good. They are kinda heavy, but have that mainstream crossover potential of a Nine Inch Nails or a Rob Zombie. It ain’t my cup of tea, but I give them credit for doing their thing and doing it well.
