Kefka X's Review:
Dome Service, now THAT'S exactly what I need! I haven't had one of those in ages! (Sorry, tasteless joke there...) Seriously though, Dome Service is not the first thing that pops into my mind when I hear the name, but is a band from Denmark that claims to "stand for a frame of mind that confronts ignorance." Now I know that there are a million bands out there that claim the same thing, and we all know how bad those musical acts suck.Fortunately, Dome Service is indeed about the music, using a healthy combination of aggressiveness and melody to convey their message through the art of music. Comparatively speaking, you can tell that these guys are trying to capitalize on the success of modern metalcore/Gothenburg/thrash bands such as Shadows Fall and Killswitch Engage. For the most part, they're quite successful, and the music is good. The riffs on here are killer and get your head bobbing quickly. The melodies are very well-done and add dimension to the music instead of just sounding fancy. The songs are just very well-written and accessible. There's nothing on this album that is necessarily evolutionary to this sort of sound, but for what it is, it's done well and quite enjoyable.
My only problem with the recording is the placement/execution of some of the solos. The demo's mix definitely pushes a strong emphasis on the guitarwork, so you would expect the solos to be clear and defining, right? Not the case here. A solo will come in strongly and then fade away into the rhythm guitars after a few seconds. The placement of each solo in each song also sounds quite strange, especially five seconds into the first track, where a solo begins...and fades into the background of the music? Oh well.
Minor flaws aside, this is a great demo. These guys have been around for a while (originally under the name Icon Bleeding in 1996), and the music shows that they know what they're doing. Time for some wicked Dome. One word review: Suggestive...?
