  • Musashi's Review:
I received this CD from Requiem and was eager to hear what new music he had found for me from Massachusetts. Fortunately, I am quite pleased with the Discreate demo and am happy that I have friends that continue to send me good new music. This four-song demo is chock full of skull-worthy metal.

The first thing that I notice is the guitars. I love cool guitar riffs, solos and harmonies: Discreate manage to provide enough of each to keep me happy. The two guitars really play together well. They manage to separate themselves nicely and avoid stepping on each other's toes, yet they create a good thick groove.

Stylistically, the music is metal but it is hard for me to categorize it. Discreate manage to blend many different subgenres of metal into their own sound. At times when the vocalist is singing, they sound like Queensryche. Then there are times when the guitars are playing riffs reminiscent of Iron Maiden and Metallica. Then there are times when the band is blazing in a Pantera-like frenzy. The singer probably spends more time singing than growling which, considering the melodic nature of the guitar parts, might lead me to categorize Discreate as a progressive metal band. However, there are enough musical moments to support an argument that Discreate is a thrash metal band. Confusing.

In any event, I think the fact that Discreate is difficult to categorize is part of their appeal. They are really creating their own sound. I generally like bands that do not fit squarely into a single category. The blending of different influences and styles keeps music interesting and fun. Discreate show their love and appreciation for metal by blending many different metal genres together to create their own sound. Unlike many bands that bite off more than they can chew, Discreate evidence a voracious appetite for making cool metal music.
