    Hel's Review:
Shortly after our Kittie reviews came out, I got an e-mail from MicHeLLe stating she agreed with me that Kitte's vocals were lame and I should check out her band, Darling Demoniac, to hear a good female growl. Well, of course I told her to bring it on! So here I sit with their latest demo and a homemade 2 page press kit. A little band bio with a nice blood-dripping font on one sheet and the contact info, in the same lovely font, on the other with a blurry photo of what I must assume is their singer. Charming. My recommendation here would be to invest a few bucks in glossy black folders and get those sheets printed up at Kinkos in glossy ink. It would look so much better than the color ink-jet printer these were done on.

The cd is four songs and arrived in a plain jewel box. This is perfectly acceptable as demos go, but again my earlier recommendations for a more professional looking press kit would vastly improve the presentation. The disk is printed with the band logo, song listing, and contact info. All of this is great - consider what happens when people like me lose the case & your demo cd is blank! No problems like that here. Not to mention it looks sweet.

"Yes, this is more what I'm looking for from women in metal than what Kittie offers."
Oh, so what's the music like? Pretty damn good! From the first second, I was pleasantly surprised. No offense intended to anyone here, but I always have to brace myself when I put in a new demo. You never know when you will be blown away with pure suckiness, and that's something you need to be prepped for. Nothing to worry about here. While the quality of the production is low, that's only to be expected. The music is solid. Since the mix is muddy, at times it's hard to distinguish the bass from the drums from the guitar, but from what I can tell, they have a strong song structure and can play their instruments pretty well.

Jessica's growl is one of the strongest female voices I've heard. She's no Karyn Crisis (I'm talking growls only - not actual harmony) but that's a standard no one else has even come close to, and I would never evoke the comparison unless this vocalist was somewhere in the ballpark. The lyrics have none of the misguided feminism that Kittie writes about, and that's great. These are non-gender-biased and about what metal songs are usually about.

Yes, this is more what I'm looking for from women in metal than what Kittie offers. The Darling Demoniac women play in the same band on the same level as the guys. On a final note, I think the inclusion of the live track at the end of the demo was bold, and there was certainly merit to doing so. Regardless, the mix on the entire cd was poor, and on the live track it was just awful. Consider including the live stuff as hidden bonus tracks, but otherwise leave them out. This is a great demo and should end on a high note, or at least a clear note. All in all, Darling Demoniac is on my list of rising bands.
