  • Slither's Review:
If one is in a band that borrows ideas from the general pool of death metal and the songs of this band have lyrics focusing entirely around a specific life philosophy, perhaps change more than one letter in the name of a more recognizable band that has a similar gimmick. Possibly not my place to judge, but come on . . . Daath? Questionable proper nouns aside, what Daath brings to the table is a semi-unique offering which blends the spacey sci-fi stylings of bands like Atrophia Red with just a splash of jump da fuck up.

The bouncing bits make their first appearance in track one with a hip-hop beat intro thingy that is pretty lame. Following that, you the listener are immersed in a world of groovy nu-death metal flaunting choppy riffs in the style of bands like Chimaira. That reference may be pushing it a bit though; there is little of the aforementioned band's flair for the occasional unique riff. No, the basic framework of what spews from this disc is just a hodgepodge of things we have all heard before. Futility may not have been the best name for an album that slams its head against this blood splattered wall.

For a summation of the band's sound imagine Atrophia Red Sun dumbed down a few shades until they are just a bit more adventurous with the riff work than Rob Zombie. Next, toss in the mandatory syncopated vocal attack with bizarre switches in tone for maximum mall appeal and that's pretty much where Daath ends up. Considering the binder that accompanied this demo with page upon page of in depth song analysis I was rather shocked by the short verse form and often childish lyrics on the album. The last aspect of the band’s repertoire is the wooshing 1960s alien movie keyboards mixed way too low in the background. And while they add a bit of fun to the tedium, in the end they are just icing on a stale cake.
